The Sheriff has taken up residence at Nottingham Castle ready for the feast of Pentecost. A tournament has been arranged and he is confident there are no outlaws around to spoil his fun. Unluckily for him however, there ARE some outlaws in the Castle, disguised as loyal supporters of the Sheriff. (Don't tell the Sheriff, but Robin Hood will also be there!).
Perhaps, by careful questioning of the participants, YOU can work out who is an outlaw and who is loyal to The Sheriff – before it all becomes clear in the afternoon tournament…
For centuries Nottingham Castle served as one of the most important in England for nobles and royalty alike. In a strategic position due to its location near a crossing of the River Trent, it was also known as a place of leisure, being close to the royal hunting grounds at Tideswell, the "Kings Larder" in the Royal Forest of the Peak, and also close to the royal forests of Barnsdale and Sherwood.
Having recently undergone a £30 million transformation, the castle is now a truly world class visitor attraction with something for everyone.
While at the Castle, we will have a fully accessible and welcoming encampment, complete with a working kitchen as well games, weapons and armour for you to try, along with surgeons' tools and torture equipment - though you probably won't want to try those. There will also be stocks & a pillory, so if you think someone deserves to spend some time in one...
So do come along and cheer the good Sheriff and boo the nasty outlaws - or is it the other way round?
The pictures below show a little of what you can expect to see during your visit. Archery - demonstration, weapons demonstration - including some lesser known weapons, heavily armoured combat display, surgery, cookery, games, crafts and more, plus armour and weapons handling opportunities for all,. So if you've ever wondered how heavy armour is or what it's really like to handle a sword, this is your chance to find out.
The Knights of Skirbeck look forward to welcoming you back to Nottingham Castle.
